Firmware TCP/IP Upgrade using JTFTPD

This document covers the TCP/IP upgrade procedure for all Microplex server products using the LiveUpdate feature of the JTFTPD Java utility.
Important
Please note the following when using JTFTPD for upgrading of Microplex Print Servers.
  • ALL your pserver settings will be set to default after the upgrade.
  • Please copy the output of "list pserver" BEFORE upgrading the unit.
General Overview
JTFTPD is a Microplex Java utility which is provided as freeware for users of Microplex server products (e.g. "print servers", "frame servers").

It was created for our customers, to simplify the process of upgrading a products firmware version via TCP/IP using a LiveUpdate feature. This feature handles the entire upgrade process for Microplex server products automatically.

It is currently only available for use on PCs running Win95/NT4.0.
 
Process Overview
In order to run the LiveUpdate feature from the JTFTPD program you must first download and install the Java Virtual Machine (i.e. "Java Runtime Environment") onto your PC.

Then you must download and install the Microplex Java JTFTPD utility onto your PC.

After you've installed JTFTPD, you should have a program group called "Java TFTPD".

From this program group run the "Java TFTPD" program.

From this program, click the "Live Update..." button to begin the installation.

  • this is the button (under Microplex logo) positioned 3rd in from the left (lightning bolt and IC icon) which shows "Live Update..." on mouseover.
  • the program needs the IPaddress of the Microplex product of to be upgraded in order to execute.
  • the program will automatically download and uncompress the files required for the desired upgrade version from the Microplex FTP site.
  • the program will then automatically upgrade the unit by writing the new firmware to the units flash PROM.
    • Warning: DO NOT POWER OFF the unit during this process.
  • the unit will reset after the firmware has been successfully upgraded.
The "Java TFTPD" program can also be used to simply query the current firmware version of a unit.
 
Required Files
The following files must be downloaded from Microplex and installed onto your PC;
  • jre-win32.exe
    • Java Virtual Machine.
  • jtftp.exe
    • Microplex JTFTP (Java utility program) with LiveUpdate feature.
Firewall Workaround for LiveUpdate
If there is a firewall, the LiveUpdate feature of the JTFTPD program will inform you that there is no new firmware for the unit.

The workaround for this is to bypass the LiveUpdate feature by manually downloading the upgrade files required for the product from Microplex to your PC yourself.

  • refer to the regular upgrade instructions for the product on how to do this.
  • these upgrade files must be placed and uncompressed into a directory called "C:\TFTPBOOT".
Once these files are ready, click the "Load new Firmware..." button in the JTFTPD program to complete the installation.
  • this is the button (under Microplex logo) positioned 2nd in from the left (arrow and IC icon) which shows "Load new Firmware..." on mouseover.
  • the program will then automatically upgrade the unit by writing the new firmware found in the "C:\TFTPBOOT" directory to the units flash PROM.
    • Warning: DO NOT POWER OFF the unit during this process.
  • the unit will reset after the firmware has been successfully upgraded.
